Months after Disney removed the “Fox” from 20th Century Studios, Walt Disney Television Studios has now renamed two of its divisions.

20th Century Fox Television and Fox 21 TV Studios have now been renamed, losing the “Fox” part of the titles. With 20th Century Fox Television becoming 20th Television Studios and Fox 21 TV Studios becoming Touchstone Television. If that name sounds familiar, its because this used to be Disney’s mainstream TV studio making shows such as “Home Improvement”, “Boy Meets World” and “Grey’s Anatomy” until 2007, when it was renamed ABC Studios.

Disney has also merged ABC Studios and ABC Signature Studios into one, which will now be known as ABC Signature.

“Our new studio names and logos mark a new day for ABC Signature, 20th Television and Touchstone Television while honoring their rich histories and the creative power of the Walt Disney Co. Dana [Walden] and I could not be more pleased with the first year of our three studios together as part of Disney Television Studios and we believe that with our powerhouse talent roster and exceptional studio teams, the best is yet to come,”

Said Disney TV Studios president Craig Hunegs.

The new logos will be rolled out immediately in new episodes, but some may not be fully integrated until the end of the year.  Library titles and episodes made before the rebrand will remain unchanged, so don’t expect to see any differences on Hulu or Disney+.

It’s certainly interesting to see Disney resurrect the “Touchstone” brand, as this was a film studio that Disney stopped using back in 2009 and was behind such hits as “Armageddon”, “Con Air”, “The Rock” and more. Though they did use the name to release some Dreamwork movies that they had distribution rights for.

The renaming of the TV studios hasn’t led to any staff changes, but is just part of Disney’s plan to remove the word “Fox”, to reduce confusion and distance itself from the “Fox Entertainment” brand.

These studios are behind many of the upcoming Disney+ Originals including “Big Shots”, “Mighty Ducks”, “Turner & Hooch” and “Just Beyond”.

What do you think of the new TV Studio names?

Who's bright idea was it to remove 'Century' from the title and make it sound like Disney has at least 19 other studios and ran out of actual brand names for this one?
