There have been many reports over the last few years about Disney wanting to continue the hugely successful “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise, which is based on the popular Disney theme park attraction of the same name.  Over the years, we’ve learned from the film’s producer, Jerry Bruckheimer stated, that there are a couple of projects in development, including one with Margot Robbie as a potential lead character for a new film, along with other reports of Johnny Depp potentially coming back to play Captain Jack Sparrow, following the conclusion of his legal issues with his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

During a recent interview with the LA Times, Craig Mazin, who is one of the co-writers for the hit HBO series, “The Last Of Us”, revealed that he was working on a new instalment in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise before the writer’s strike began and that it had been greenlight by Disney.  One of the conditions he had with the projects, was that he wanted to work with Ted Elliot, who co-wrote the first four films in the franchise.

“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script, and the strike happened, and everyone’s waiting around.”

There are also questions about whether Johnny Depp would like to return to the role, following the situation with his recent legal issues, since he was disappointed with how Disney handled the situation and how Disney has been very non-committal about his possibly returning.  But Depp has said he would return if the script was good, and bringing back the original film’s writer could be a way of doing that.

Unfortunately, until the writer’s and actors’ strikes are resolved, there isn’t going to be any movement forward on the next instalment in the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” franchise, but in the meantime, at least we can enjoy the previous films on Disney+!
