One of the most unique Marvel series to be released on Disney+ has been “Moon Knight”, which was released two years ago and saw Oscar Isaac take on the title role in a series that tells the story of what happens when Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life, he discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

Since that show finished, we have seen the character appear in an episode of the Marvel animated series, “What If?”, but we’ve not seen a live-action version of Moon Knight appear in any other Disney+ series or film, leading many fans to speculate about the character’s future.   Many fans have been expecting Moon Knight to either return for another season or team up with other supernatural characters like Werewolf By Night, Agatha, Iron Fist, Blade or Ghost Rider as part of a Midnight Suns group of heroes.

Since the launch of the first Marvel Studios series on Disney+, “WandaVision”, we’ve seen the streaming service go through some major strategy changes, with the Bob Chapek era of the early 2020s being focused on creating as many Disney+ shows as possible to compete with Netflix and to grow subscriber numbers, since the return of Bob Iger, we’ve see that flip 180 degrees, refocusing on quality over quantity.

We’ve seen the pipeline of Marvel Studios projects drastically slow down, and many projects have been delayed. The last remaining shows greenlighted under Bob Chapek have been released. Moving forward, Marvel is moving away from single-season shows that focus on a single character and getting back to a more traditional television release model.

During a recent interview with ComicBook, to promote the upcoming Marvel Disney+ series, “Daredevil: Born Again”, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum shared an update on the future of “Moon Knight” and explained that it is unlikely to be a second season of the show.

“So I think Marvel Television has happened in waves, and I think Moon Knight happened in a wave of shows that were going to establish characters that would tie-in to the future.  And moving forward our priorities have shifted. We’re making shows as shows that can exist as annual releases, more like television. I would love to see a Moon Knight Season 2, but there are plans for Moon Knight down the road”

Marvel has two major “Avengers” films set to be released in the next few years, “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”, which will feature many new and established characters, so it’s possible Moon Knight does appear in them.  However, with the sheer number of new characters introduced in phases four and five, along with a general problem of characters getting their own shows not translating well to the cinema (Sam Wilson and Ms Marvel), I wouldn’t be surprised if they cut back a little on how many superheroes make cameos.

With Marvel changing its plans to series that can have annual releases, does that leave the door open for a series about supernatural characters that can go alongside the main MCU films but also remain slightly disconnected?   Marvel’s introduced so many characters in such a small amount of time, having some team-up shows like the “Defenders”, “Champions”, and “Midnight Sons” might be the only way to keep so many characters involved without years between appearances.  Especially as Marvel is also reducing the amount of shows it releases on Disney+.
