This month, Marvel Studios is giving Disney+ subscribers five brand new shorts from the “I Am Groot” series. The series features a Baby Groot, who finds himself exploring the universe and beyond aboard the Guardians’ spaceships, coming face-to-face—or nose-to-nose—with new and colourful creatures and environments.

The “I Am Groot” shorts are very different to anything else in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and are more in line with classic Walt Disney Animation or Pixar shorts. They are simple, silly and lots of fun to watch. If you’ve seen the first season, you’ll know what to expect, and if not, it’s a good time to check them out before the second season of shorts arrives.

These shorts shouldn’t be taken too seriously, and if you don’t like your superhero adventures with its tongue firmly in its cheek, skip them; you won’t be missing anything important. Unless you count Groot struggling to find some money behind the sofa to buy a treat from the ice cream space truck or building a snowman! Other stories include discovering the sense of smell after accidentally adding a nose and finding a small chick in the forest, only to discover raising another creature is a lot of work! Though perhaps my favourite short, involves bringing The Watcher from the “What If?” series into have a bit of fun.

Each short is only around 4 minutes long, and thankfully, Groot does fast-forward the Marvel Studios logo intro to get to the good bits! The animation style is great, and it looks realistic, but it helps that there aren’t any actual humans involved. There are a few little easter eggs throughout the series that hardcore Marvel fans are going to enjoy too.

I personally find “I Am Groot” so refreshing and showcases why not everything in the MCU has to be taken so seriously and how Disney+ can offer something that just wouldn’t be possible without it. While I would love Marvel to take a note out of Pixar or Disney’s playbook and show a new short before every new movie release, I imagine some Marvel fans would find it offputting, but for me, it’s certainly more entertaining than 20 minutes of ads.

Overall, “I Am Groot” are short adventures for young Marvel fans and those Marvel fans who are still young at heart. If you don’t think Baby Groot is adorable and just fun to watch, these aren’t for you. I really enjoyed these shorts and have already watched them a few times each already (the advantage of them being only a few minutes long)”.  They are a bit daft, very silly, and you should get plenty of laughs out of them.  I honestly have zero complaints about this series of shorts, other than I would like more of them!

Rating – 4 Out Of 5
