Marvel Producer Provides Update On “Echo” Disney+ Series
One of the Marvel Studios series currently in development is “Echo”, which stars Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez, aka Echo, who was introduced in the Marvel Studios series, “Hawkeye”. This new series will tell the origin story of Echo and revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behaviour in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.
“Echo” also stars Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, and Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock / Daredevil, along with Chaske Spencer (“Wild Indian,” “The English”), Tantoo Cardinal (“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Stumptown”), Devery Jacobs (FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” “American Gods”) and Cody Lightning (“Hey, Viktor!” “Four Sheets to the Wind”), with Graham Greene (“1883,” “Goliath”) and Zahn McClarnon (“Dark Winds,” FX’s “Reservation Dogs”).
The series was announced during Disney+ Day in 2021, and filming took place last year. Disney has previously announced that the series would arrive on Disney+ in the summer of 2023, but recently showrunner Marion Dayre revealed that the series had been delayed until the end of this year.
Recently, Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development and producer Stephen Broussard spoke with Collider, and provided a new update on the new “Echo” series.
“[Production on ‘Echo’] is going well. It’s very different. Like, talking about Werewolf by Night to this. It’s a very different tonal sort of thing. I don’t want to say too much because there’s not a whole lot out there in the world, but it feels very grounded, it feels very spiritual in ways that feel fresh for us. Alaqua as the lead is incredibly compelling. I’m sort of hard-pressed to think of something that it feels like outside in the broader realm of the MCU, let alone within what we’ve done here. So stay tuned on that really cool stuff.”
He also spoke about how they embrace the tone shifts between the projects, depending on the need of the characters:
“It’s always about embracing whatever it is, right? Like embracing a Universal Hammer Horror film, kind of leaning into that and, I think leaning into what’s unique about any viewing property. What’s unique about this property is that it’s much more grounded, and it’s in rural Oklahoma, which is where it takes place. So it’s fun, and it’s been an amazing teamwork, and working with that team behind the scenes.”
Hopefully, it won’t be too long until we get confirmation of when “Echo” will be released on Disney+, but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the show was pushed into 2024, as Disney is looking to cut costs and spreading out its releases would assist that, plus the show wasn’t listed as an upcoming title in 2023 on a recent presentation from the quarterly results.
