Following the success of the “LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special”, a brand new summer holiday special is coming to Disney+ on Friday 5th August 2022. This special is around 45 minutes long and is set after the events of “Rise Of Skywalker”. With the First Order now defeated, Finn takes his friends on a surprise vacation aboard the Galactic Starcruiser, the Halcyon (aka the new hotel that opened up earlier this year at Walt Disney World, which is a nice little tie-in).
Finn is struggling to relax, resulting in him getting visited by the Force ghosts of Leia, Anakin and Obi-Wan, who each tell a story to Finn about when they’ve had fun on vacation.
Obi-Wan Kenobi tells a story of helping out a Rebel spy by pretending to be her husband, Anakin shares a horrible beach vacation with the Emperor, while Leia tells a story of when a young Kylo stole the Millenium Falcon to impress a girl.
As you’d expect from an animated LEGO special, it’s got plenty of fun gags and little easter eggs that older fans can join. I personally enjoyed Kenobi’s story the most of the three, but I found the “main” branching story of Finn on the cruiser a bit meaningless, though they keep teasing him being force sensitive.
These three stories help break up the overall feel of the special and generally flows a little better than the previous holiday special, since the use of Force ghosts is much more natural than time travelling portals. This is one of the problems of these specials, as these specials are trying to cover three different eras at the same time. I hope in future specials, they just focus on a single era or possibly just go for a series of shorts, which might work a little better as a format and allow them more freedom.
“LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation” is a fun animated special for younger audiences, but older audiences might find it a little childish, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy watching it. If you have enjoyed previous LEGO Star Wars specials or video games, then this is just more of the same.
Rating – 3 out of 5
