Kenny Ortega Developing New “Phantom Of The Opera” Movie For Disney+
Disney has begun early development on a brand new Young-Adult reimagination of the classic novel, “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux.
The original novel was released in 1909 and is set in the 1880s, tells the story of Erik, a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.
Since the original book is now in the public domain, Disney can make a movie about it, without having to pay royalities. But obviously it will be very different to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, since it can only take elements from the book.
According to Deadline, The upcoming version is going to be developed by Disney Branded Entertainment and Kenny Ortega, who has previously worked on “High School Musical” and “Descendants”. Disney is hoping that this project could become the next big franchise for teens.
This marks the return of Kenny Ortega to Disney, who recently wrapped up his overall deal with Netflix. He will be the director and the executive producer under his production banner, The KO Company. The script was written by Giovanni M. Porta, who previously worked on “At Midnight”, and is based on a story by Porta and Eric Bromberg. Candle Media’s Exile Content will also be an executive producer on the project after it brings it to Disney.
Roger’s Take: It’ll be interesting to see a new version of “Phantom Of The Opera.” I wouldn’t be surprised if they modernised the story and brought it into the modern day, with a lineup of as many of the best Disney Channel stars as possible. It’s no doubt going to be very different to any version of the classic story.
