The fallout hits as the Albanians make a move against Clement Mansell, but Mansell finds a way to get back at them and have his final showdown with Marshal Raylan Givens in the limited series finale of “Justified: City Primeval.” Marshal Givens is doing everything he can to clean up the corruption in Detroit after the Albanians took Judge Guy’s book from Mansell and gave it to him. Corrupt cops get arrested. Corrupt lawyers end up losing out on promotions, and there’s a new judge in Detroit. Meanwhile Marshal Givens makes a choice about his future just as a familiar face reemerges.

I really enjoyed half of this episode and just didn’t care about the other half. None of it was bad, but it felt like a disappointing ending after how great the first seven episodes were. I know a lot of it fit with the theme from the original “Justified” series, but it just didn’t work for me this time. I enjoyed Givens and Mansell finally having the final confrontation and the fallout from the little black book.

However, I didn’t care too much for the retirement storyline. Mostly because I knew they would set up a potential second limited series down the road, so the retirement was never going to stick. Still, I’m happy to see the connection back to “Justified” with Boyd Crowder escaping prison.

I’m hopeful we get another limited series down the road and this doesn’t just turn out to be a meaningless cliffhanger. This was an excellent limited series filled with drama, action and excitement. I want to see Marshal Givens back in the saddle at some point, but I also don’t want to see it too soon. Let the series breathe and allow absence to make the heart grow fonder. This was one of the best revisits to a series I can remember and the potential for more is there. It just has to be handled with care.
