The finale of the latest Marvel Studios series, “Secret Invasion”, was released on Disney+. The series is set in the present-day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart the imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

Recently, SFX Magazine spoke with the director of the Disney+ series, Ali Selim and asked him about the potential of a second season, to which he replied:

“There are some characters that are no longer with us and some characters that live to see another challenge. I would love to see that challenge become Season 2,”

There are many elements of “Secret Invasion” that could be followed up in future instalments in the MCU, either in a second season or another season (Olivia Colman leading a team of superheroes would be fun to see).

So far, every Marvel series that has been released on Disney+ has only run for one season, though that will change in October, with the release of the second season of “Loki”.  But every show has elements that can be continued in future instalments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Such as the events of “WandaVision” causing Scarlet Witch enough distress to become a villain in “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness” or how “WandaVision” and “Ms Marvel” help set up the main characters for the next major theatrical release, “The Marvels”.

And while the ending of “Secret Invasion” seems to suggest a leap straight into the events of “The Marvels”, (with Nick Fury appearing on the SABER space station in the trailer, it wasn’t really kept a surprise!).  There also are some other links to “The Marvels”, such as mentioning the Kree, but it seems the main goal was setting upcoming films, “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Armor Wars”.   There was no post-credit scene, nor a message saying there would be another season.

However, with less than stellar viewing figures for this Disney+ series and less social media engagement than previous shows, plus with the writers/actors strikes and Disney planning on slowing down its upcoming release schedule, it’s likely we won’t have seen the last of the Skrulls, but a second season, is probably unlikely.  But the effects of this show will no doubt have ripple effects in many projects for years to come.
