Last year, Disney released a brand new series called “Black Cake”, which was based on the New York Times-bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson.  But unfortunately, the show won’t be returning for a second season.

The series tells the story of a family drama wrapped in a murder mystery with a diverse cast of characters and a global setting. The story takes place in Jamaica, Italy, Scotland, England and Southern California. In the late 1960s, a runaway bride named Covey disappears into the surf off the coast of Jamaica and is feared drowned or a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder.

In present-day California, a widow named Eleanor Bennett loses her battle with cancer, leaving her two estranged children, Byron and Benny, a flash drive that holds previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America. These stories, narrated by Eleanor, shock her children and challenge everything they thought they knew about their family’s origin.

The series stars Mia Isaac, Adrienne Warren, Chipo Chung, Ashley Thomas, Lashay Anderson, Faith Alabi and Glynn Turman.

Marissa Jo Cerar served as showrunner and executive producer. The series was executive produced by Oprah Winfrey, Aaron Kaplan, Carla Gardini, Brian Morewitz, Charmaine Wilkerson, and Michael Lohmann. “Black Cake” was produced by Two Drifters, Harpo Films, ABC Signature, and Kapital Entertainment.

The decision to cancel the show apparently happened a few months ago, and according to Deadline, there had been reports that Netflix was in talks to take over the show since it had been interested in it prior to Hulu picking it up. However, these talks never came to anything since it’s rare for these deals to work out.

You can watch “Black Cake” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.

Roger’s Take:  It’s been over ten months since the series was released and generally, if we’ve not heard about a renewal in that time, it’s not usually a good sign.  As with any recent cancellation, if you haven’t watched “Black Cake” yet or haven’t finished, I’d recommend doing it as soon as possible, as Disney often removes cancelled shows to save money.

Unfortunately, “Black Cake” didn’t pull in enough viewers on Hulu and Disney+ to warrant the series continuing, though I do think the show should have had some more promotion, and it didn’t help with international audiences having to wait months for the show to arrive on Disney+, losing out on more social media engagement.
