Following a recent surge in viewership of the classic 20th Television drama series, “Prison Break” after it was added onto Netflix, pushing the show into the Nielsen streaming chart, there has been rumours that Disney was looking to revive the show.

The project has been in development for over a year, but now Deadline has revealed that Hulu has now placed a pilot of a new “Prison Break” series for the streaming service, which is going to be created by Elgin James, who previously created “Mayans M.C” and “The Outlaws”.

The original series follows Michael Scofield as he goes to prison to try to save the life of his only brother Lincoln, who is on death row for a crime he didn’t commit.

No plot details have been revealed about the new series, which is expected to be its own thing, set within the same universe as the original series. It’s not expected that any of the original series actors, Wentworth Miller, and Dominic Purcell, will be returning for this series, though I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a few easter eggs or a cameo if it does get picked up for a series.

The upcoming show will be executive produced by Elgin James under his Sierra Drive production banner. Four of the original producers on the original series are returning including the show’s creator Paul Scheuring, along with Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz.

Should the pilot get picked up for a full season, expect to see it released on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was also shown on Disney’s linear channels like ABC.

All previous seasons of “Prison Break” are available to stream on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.

Roger’s Take: Bringing back a popular series, either as a revival, reboot, or sequel, is never easy, as fans naturally have expectations. With so many popular shows like “Suits,” “Lost,” and “Gossip Girl” blowing up after being released on Netflix, it shows that audiences want to watch more traditional procedural drama shows, and it does look like Disney wants to return to doing more shows like this.  “Prison Break” was a great show, and hopefully, this new chapter can live up to the name.
