In early 2021, Marvel Studios released a new mini-series called “Marvel Studios Legends,” a series of recap short episodes that celebrates and codifies what has come before.

In these episodes, viewers revisit the epic heroes, villains and moments from across the MCU in preparation for the highly anticipated stories still to come. Each dynamic segment feeds directly into the upcoming series or film that would premiere on Disney+ — setting the stage for future events. “Marvel Studios: Legends” weaves together the many threads that constitute the unparalleled Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This series was a perfect way to remind yourself of the character and artefact highlights from previous films and shows without the need to go back and rewatch a whole series or film before a new series or film is released, such as “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 3,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and many more.

Over the past three years, two seasons of “Marvel Studios Legends” have been released, with twenty-six episodes in the first season and twenty-eight episodes in the second season.

Depending on the new show or film being released, Disney would release a different number of episodes, depending on what characters have previously done within the MCU. Disney would also upload these short episodes onto YouTube as a way of promoting upcoming projects while also generating more viewership for the Legends episodes.

Each episode released on YouTube has generated, on average, around 250,000 views, though some episodes featuring popular characters have pulled in over a million views.

However, the last episode of “Marvel Studios Legends” released was for the second season of “What If”?, which came out in December 2023.

We’ve seen Marvel Studios drastically cut back on the content they produce for Disney+. When “Echo” was released on the streaming service in early 2024, Disney didn’t add any new episodes of “Legends,” such as for “Echo,” “Daredevil,” or “Kingpin.”

Since Marvel changed its stance on if the former Netflix Marvel shows featuring “Daredevil” and “Kingpin” just prior to the release of “Echo”, there could have been valid reasons why “Echo” didn’t get any new episodes of “Legends”, however, it did still get a release of Marvel’s behind-the-scene documentary series, “Assembled”.

Marvel also didn’t release any episodes of “Legends” for the release of “X-Men ’97” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”, though because none of the previous films or shows for these two projects took place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was possible that new episodes of “Legends” might not have made sense.

Once again, Marvel did release an episode of “Assembled” for “X-Men ’97” and since “Deadpool & Wolverine” hasn’t been released on Disney+, it’s likely an “Assembled” special for that film will arrive shortly afterwards, similar to previous film releases.

With the release of the new series, “Agatha All Along,” once again, no new “Legends” episodes were released, such as highlighting the major highlights from Agatha’s appearance in the “WandaVision” series. So, the reasoning that the previous shows and films were skipped over due to those prior events technically not happening within the MCU goes out the window.

Since there hasn’t been a single episode of “Marvel Studios Legends” released in 2024, it’s looking very likely that the show has been cancelled.

Disney has been going on a major cost-cutting exercise, reducing the amount of content its studios create, and we’ve seen Marvel Studios drastically cut back on its new releases.   So it’s likely that “Marvel Studios Legends” is another project to be axed since, while it’s unlikely these shorts cost much to make (since it just clips), there is still a cost involved for those who worked on it.   So, no doubt, they did a cost analysis and decided “Marvel Studios Legends” wasn’t worth it.

Roger’s Take:  I personally do think the show is done, since Disney+ has been slowly dropping most of its “fluff” content, especially these companion items like “What’s Up Disney+”, “Disney+ Deets”, “Bridging The Gap”, “Voices” and other promotional pieces.   When executives were trying to ramp up the production lineup for Disney+, it was releasing lots of lower-quality content to fill the void, especially in the early days of Disney+, but in the quest for profitability, it looks like we can add another original series to the scrap pile.
