Disney+ Orders “Spaceship Earth” Pilot
Disney has had plenty of successful films based on its popular Disney theme park attractions such as “Pirates Of The Caribbean”, “Haunted Mansion”, and “Jungle Cruise”.
There have been many other projects in development for years, including “Figment”, but now Disney+ is setting up a new show based on the popular EPCOT attraction, “Spaceship Earth”.
The attraction opened back in 1982 and is the icon of the park. It lets guests travel through time and explore the remarkable history of human communication from the Stone Age to the computer age.
While the “Spaceship Earth” show will tell the story of what happens when a mission to avert an imminent global cataclysm goes awry; a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces to confront a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself.
The streaming service has ordered a pilot, which is being created by 20th Television, with Jason Fuchs (IT: Welcome To Derry) and Michael Waldron (Loki) creating the show as executive producers. Michael will also be the showrunner on the project. Lee Toland Krieger (You, Riverdale, Shadow & Bone) will be directing the pilot and will executive produce along with Adam Fishbach via his Fishbach Productions, and Adam Fasullo.
No other details, such as who might star in it or when production will begin, have been revealed. As with any pilot, this project might go through some creative changes during development and might not necessarily make it to our screens.
Roger’s Take: I’ve always enjoyed taking a ride on “Spaceship Earth” every time I visit EPCOT, and the attraction building, aka the globe at the entrance to the park, is iconic. Disney+ is in need of new original shows for the whole family, and if they can get the story right, it should work. The plot of having teenagers trying to join together to save the world is very different from the attraction, but considering how the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” films varied so much from the attraction, that’s probably a good sign.
