Disney+ Greenlights First Polish Original Series “Breslau”
After many successful European originals launching on Disney+ like “Shardlake”, “The Full Monty” and “Renegade Nell”, Disney+ is now starting to make a move into making originals within Central and Eastern Europe, with the first series being greenlight for Poland.
The upcoming Polish drama is going by the working title of “Breslau” and will follow a police officer called Franz Podolsky, who investigates a horrific killing, and with the upcoming Olympic Games, there is additional pressure on Franz to catch the murderer. This new eight-part crime drama is set in 1936 in Breslau
The brand-new series will star Tomasz Schuchardt (You are God), Agata Kulesza (Ida), and Sandra Drzymalska (Filip). It will be directed by Leszek Dawid (My Name Is Ki), and Bartosz Janiszewski and Magdalena Żakowska have written the series.
Magdalena Cieslak, Director of Original Productions Disney+ in CEE, said in a statement to Deadline regarding the new series:
“This is an important moment for Disney+ in Poland. It’s our first Original production in Central and Eastern Europe and we are excited that such talented, and experienced creators and actors are working on the project. We are also happy that our first Polish series will further expand the offer of productions intended for wider audience.”
“Breslau” is currently in production and is being created by Poland’s largest independent studio, ATM Grupa, who has previously worked on “The Border” and “Absolute Beginners”.
No release date has been announced for the series, but hopefully, it won’t be too long until we find out more about it.
Roger’s POV: It’s great to see Disney embracing more localised content, but in reality, it’s really going to need to drastically up its content output to make much difference. One or two shows per country, every now and again, might not be enough of an encouragement to get new subscribers, but it also shows how Disney is ramping up its overall European output, which it needs to do in order to operate within the region.
