Disney Developing New Movie About Dr Jane Goodall
Back in 2017, National Geographic created a new documentary film called “Jane” about iconic chimpanzee expert Dr Jane Goodall, which told the story of Jane’s early explorations and research in Tanzania, focusing on her groundbreaking field work, her relationship with her cameraman and husband Hugo van Lawick, and the chimpanzees that were the subject of her study.
Deadline has revealed that Disney is developing a movie about Jane’s life. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way is creating the film, and Eleanor Catton, who previously worked on the 2020 adaptation of the Jane Austen classic, “Emma”, has written the script. Jane will also be a producer on the film, along with Appian Way’s Jennifer Davisson and Michael Hampton.
During an interview to celebrate her 90th birthday, Jane confirmed that the project is happening.
“They’re making a film about me with an actress. I’ve seen the first draft of the script and made a lot of comments.”
Jane has worked with DisneyNature for many years, acting as an ambassador for the brand and contributing to the films, “Penguin” and Chimpanzee.”
A deal was made between Appian Way and Disney for her life rights, though no more details on this project have been revealed, such as who will be starring in the film and if it will be released in cinemas or onto Disney+.
You can watch “Chimpanzee” and “Jane” on Disney+ now.
Roger’s Take: Jane has led an incredible life, and with her recently celebrating her 90th birthday, I’m much happier she is involved in the script and producing the movie, rather than it happening years in the future without her involvement.
