Disney Developing “Choose Your Own Adventure” Movie

Back in 1979, a brand new book called “The Cave of Time” by Edward Packard was released, and this was the first instalment in the “Choose Your Own Adventure” franchise, which has gone on to sell over 250 million copies between its 184 different books in the series.

Each book features a story told from the second-person perspective and features branching narratives that sees the reader making choices along the way that result in the story changing depending on those options.

Disney’s 20th Century Studios is developing a brand new film based on this idea, which will be directed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who have previously worked on “Ready Or Not” and “Scream”.

According to Deadline, the script for the movie will be written by Tom Bissell, who previously worked on the Disney+ original series, “Andor”, along with many popular video games, “Gears 5” and “Uncharted 4”.  Bringing in a video game writer is also an interesting way to adapt the unique style of the original book series.

Unfortunately, no plot details on this film have been revealed, and it’ll be interesting to see how they incorporate the “Choose Your Own Adventure” element, either by having the characters create their own story while reading the book as they go along similar to “Jumanji” or “Never Ending Story”, rather than an “interactive” film, which just wouldn’t work for a theatrical release but would be perfect for Disney+/Hulu, similar to how Netflix tried doing an interactive episode of “Black Mirror”.   This could be an interesting element for Disney+, but it seems like they want a theatrical release for the movie, so maybe they’ll release different versions of the film, so it changes depending on which version is shown, though they might be too expensive to produce.

With almost 200 different books in the franchise, there will be plenty of different stories and ideas to inspire this new movie.   Disney is in desperate need of something new and refreshing, while also offering something nostalgic for the audience.
