Disney+ Appoints Director Of Content For Canada
Disney has appointed a brand new director of content for Disney+ in Canada, Stephanie Azam, who was a former executive at Telefilm.
Stephanie Azam has previously worked as a VP of development and acquisitions for MK2 Mile End, which is a Quebec-based independent distribution firm. Prior to that, she worked for over thirteen years at Canadian government-owned Telefilm Canada, where she worked as the National Director Feature Film for twelve years. Stephanie also spent five years working as the Director of Theatrical Marketing Zeitgeist Films.
This new position will hopefully lead to some original content being created for Disney+ in Canada, as currently, there haven’t been any Disney+ Originals. However, many of the original shows on the streaming platform, such as the upcoming series, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”, are being filmed in Canada, as are many other shows.
Disney+ has hundreds of local originals in production around the world, and hopefully, this new position will mean Canada will also start to get its own original content. Other streamers such as Netflix and Amazon have appointed local content directors to improve the amount of Canadian content created.
This new job could also potentially see more content added to Disney+ with a Canadian feel. Currently, in Asia and Europe, Disney+ is adding lots of licenced content, to not only apply with local government content quotas but also to appeal more to subscribers in those regions.
