Last year, Lucasfilm released a brand new live-action Star Wars series on Disney+ called “Ahsoka”, which is set after the fall of the Empire, “Star Wars: Ahsoka” follows the former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

The first season was released over the summer, and earlier this summer, Disney announced that a second season is currently in production, though no release date has yet been announced for the show.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen a drastic shift within Disney to reduce the amount of original content it creates, especially for its major franchises, such as Star Wars.  This is being done because Disney is no longer spending billions of dollars on creating content to chase subscribers and is now focused on profitability.  The flood of Star Wars shows onto Disney+ has also impacted the quality of the series released, such as “The Acolyte” and “The Book Of Boba Feta”, as the creatives were forced to create as much as they could, as quickly as they could.

We are now seeing a drastic slowdown; instead of multiple shows a year, as we saw for the first few years of Disney+, we will only see two live-action shows, “Skeleton Crew” and the second season of “Andor”, released in 2025.  In 2026, Star Wars will return to the big screen with “The Mandalorian & Grogu”, which will be the first adventure in cinemas for the pair, but this film was originally developed as a fourth season of “The Mandalorian”.

According to industry insider Daniel Richman, Lucasfilm is currently planning on making sure the second season of “Ahsoka” wraps up the storyline in case a third season doesn’t happen, especially following the cancellation of “The Acolyte”.

It doesn’t necessarily mean “Ahsoka” is cancelled, but Lucasfilm is apparently being much more realistic about the chances of future seasons, especially if the viewership numbers aren’t there.  Ultimately, if the second season of “Ahsoka” pulls in a large enough audience to warrant another season on Disney+, they have that option, but designing the next season as a potential final season, isn’t necessarily a bad thing.  There is nothing worse than a show ending on a cliffhanger and never returning to explain what happened next.

Production on the second season of “Ahsoka” is due to begin in early 2025, likely in April 2025.  Disney is also hosting its “Star Wars: Celebration” event in April in Tokyo, Japan.  So it’s likely we will get a better update on the new series then, but if filming is only just starting around that time, those in attendance might not get to see any footage.

The first season of “Ahsoka”, plus the animated series, “Rebels” and “The Clone Wars”, which feature many of the characters from the live-action series, are also available to stream on Disney+.

Do you think it’s right that the show is planned around its ending?  Let me know on social media!
