Disney’s 20th Century Studios has picked up a script for a new comedy based on “Romeo & Juliet”. Deadline is reporting that Kaitlyn Dever is attached to star in the film and Karen Maine has been tapped to direct the film.

The film is based on the novel “When You Were Mine” by Rebecca Serle and is a modern twist on the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, we see “the most famous love story ever told” through the eyes of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline, a sharp but idealistic young woman—who happens to be Romeo’s recent ex. What begins as an attempt to foil the famous romance and win back her guy becomes a journey of self-discovery as she ultimately works to help get the star-crossed lovers back together.

MGM was previously working on the project, but 20th Century Studios has now acquired it.

Kaitlyn Dver has previously starred in “Last Man Standing” and will be starring in the upcoming Hulu/Star Original series “Dopesick”. Karen Maine has previously directed “Yes, God, Yes” and “Starstruck”.

21 Laps, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen are producing the film. With Emily Morris & Becca Edelman are overseeing the project for 21 Laps. Sarah Shepard is overseeing the film for 20th Century.

The novel has been adapted into a script by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who previously worked on the 20th Century Studios films “The Fault In Our Stars” and “500 Days of Summer”.
