Over the past few months, development on a new sequel to the 2003 version of “Freaky Friday” has slowly been ramping up, following the news that Disney is looking to start filming the new movie this coming summer in Los Angeles.

The new film will see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan return as the mother and daughter who will once again switch places, but unlike the last film, now they are twenty years older, with that twist of Jamie Lee Curtis’s character now moving into the body of a thirty-plus year old adult.

It was revealed earlier this year that Nisha Ganatra had joined the project as the film’s director, following her work on the Hulu Originals, “Welcome To Chippendales” and “Future Man”. This new film will be produced by Andrew Gunn and Kristin Burr, with Jordan Weiss writing the script.

According to The InSneider Newsletter, Julia Butters is in talks to join the cast of this new Freaky Friday sequel. Julia has previously starred “The Gray Man”, “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”, “Criminal Minds: Evolution” and the Disney animated series, “Monsters At Work”.

No other details on the upcoming “Freaky Friday” sequel have been revealed, such as its name, plot or if the film is going to be released as a Disney+ Original or if it will be released first in cinemas.

Disney has made many different versions of the “Freaky Friday” story over the years, with the first film being released in 1976, which saw Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster play a mother and daughter who swap places and are forced to live with each other’s lives. You can find the previous “Freaky Friday” films available to stream now on Disney+.
