This summer, 20th Century Studios released “Vacation Friends 2” on Disney’s streaming services around the world, including Hulu, Star+ and Disney+.  The film is a follow-up to the original raw and raunchy comedy film, which came out in 2021 and tells the story of a straight-laced Marcus and Emily, who are befriended by wild, thrill-seeking partiers Ron and Kyla at a resort in Mexico. Living in the moment, the usually level-headed couple lets loose to enjoy a week of uninhibited fun and debauchery with their new “vacation friends.” Months after their walk on the wild side, Marcus and Emily are horrified when Ron and Kyla show up uninvited at their wedding, creating chaos and proving that what happens on vacation, doesn’t necessarily stay on vacation.

While in the second film, picks up a few months after the end of “Vacation Friends,” this hilarious sequel finds newly married couple Marcus and Emily inviting their uninhibited besties Ron and Kyla, who are also newly married and have a baby, to join them for a vacation when Marcus lands an all-expenses- paid trip to a Caribbean resort. His reason for travelling there in the first place is to meet with the owners of the resort to bid on a construction contract for a hotel they own in Chicago. But when Kyla’s incarcerated father Reese (Steve Buscemi) is released from San Quentin and shows up at the resort unannounced at the worst possible moment, things get out of control, upending Marcus’ best-laid plans and turning the vacation friends’ perfect trip into total chaos.

The two films star John Cena (“F9,” “The Suicide Squad”), Lil Rel Howery (“Get Out,” “Judas and the Black Messiah”), Yvonne Orji (“Insecure,” “Night School”), and Meredith Hagner (“Search Party,” “Palm Springs”).  Both films have been directed by Clay Tarver (“Silicon Valley”).

Will there be a “Vacation Friends 3”?

Officially, “Vacations Friends 3” hasn’t been officially announced, and with the current actors/writers strike underway, it’s unlikely we will have any announcements while the strikes are still ongoing.

The first film was the most-watched original movie on Hulu over the span of its first three days after release, which resulted in the sequel being greenlight and released just two years later.  Currently, no data has been released regarding the viewership of the second film, and Disney will usually only make announcements regarding viewership, if it’s very good.

“Vacation Friends” could easily return for future instalments, since it’s just some friends going on holiday together, so there is no storyline reason why this couldn’t continue for more films.

Recently, the film’s director was asked about another film in an interview with LRM Online, to which he replied, “I’ll try, I’ll try!”

However, Disney is also going through a major shift in its streaming strategy, focusing more on profitability than gaining subscribers, which has resulted in the company prioritising theatrical releases.  This may reduce the chances of a “Vacation Friends 3”, since will audiences go to a cinema to watch what is a straight-to-streaming franchise?

If a “Vacation Friends 3” is likely to happen, it will be a few years until we see it, but in the meantime, you can watch both “Vacation Friends” films on Hulu in the United States, on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ around the world.
