This March, Sony Pictures is releasing the next instalment in the “Ghostbusters” franchise called, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire”, which sees the Spengler family return to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level.

But when the discovery of an ancient artefact unleashes an army of ghosts that casts a death chill upon the city, Ghostbusters, new and old, must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is directed by Gil Kenan, who wrote it with Jason Reitman.

This film is based on the 1984 film “Ghostbusters” and sees some of the original cast, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson. Also starring in the new movie are Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt.

When Is “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” Released?

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is being released exclusively in cinemas on March 22nd 2024. Following its theatrical release, it will then be released on digital platforms like Apple, Amazon, and Vudu for purchase/rent before being released on physical media formats like DVD and Blu-Ray.

When Will “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” Be On Disney+?

Since Sony Pictures is releasing the movie, it won’t automatically come to Disney+ following its theatrical and digital release.

In the United States, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will first be available on Netflix as part of a multi-year Pay One deal for around eighteen months.

Disney does have a multi-year Pay Two licensing deal for the United States that covers Sony’s theatrical releases from 2022 to 2026 for its vast portfolio of platforms, including its streaming services Disney+ and Hulu, as well as linear entertainment networks ABC, Disney Channels, Freeform, FX, and National Geographic. This is why you can find “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters 2” on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+.

This means that “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will likely arrive on Disney+ and Hulu around two years after its theatrical release, March/April 2026. However, no exact Disney+ release has been announced yet, and it’s unlikely that will happen until much later.

Internationally, things are a little less complicated since while Disney has licensed some “Spider-Man” films for Disney+, it hasn’t licensed other films from Sony’s library.
