Following on from the success of the 2021 remake of the original Disney Channel Original Movie, is “Under Wraps 2”, which picks up as Marshall, Gilbert and Amy are getting ready to attend Amy’s father’s Spooktacular Halloween-themed wedding to his fiancé Carl. However, plans soon go awry when the three friends discover their mummy pal Harold and his beloved Rose may be in danger. Sobek, an evil mummy with a 1000-year-old grudge against his best friend-turned-bitter-rival Harold, is unexpectedly awakened and out for revenge. With help from his hypnotized lacky Larry, Sobek kidnaps Rose. Gilbert, Marshall, Buzzy and Harold must use their skills once again to save her and get back in time to attend the wedding.

One of the things that works well about this movie, is that with it being a sequel, it doesn’t have the baggage of being a remake, it’s all-new, and therefore, the story can do its own thing.  Plus, the film doesn’t have to spend any time establishing the main characters and gets you up to speed on where they are now, such as setting up that Marshall feeling like a third wheel as Amy and Gilbert have become closer since the events of the last film.  And throughout the film, the pacing is pretty quick, never spending too long on one specific issue, which is better for younger audiences.

The introduction of a new evil Mummy changes up the pace of the film, since there is a little more risk, though that doesn’t stop the heroes from having a laugh along the way and, more importantly, having a dance.   The film doesn’t add too many new characters, so it keeps everything pretty simple, so younger audiences aren’t going to get too lost with the story.

Plus, Harold and Rose, the Mummies, keep things upbeat and funny, which also will keep younger audiences entertained.  It’s one of the good things about this film, Harold is involved in so many more scenes, which is a bonus.

I honestly thought the film was enjoyable, and I think kids are going to enjoy it, but it’s probably only for those who enjoyed the first film.  If you found that too childish, the sequel doesn’t do anything differently, but overall, it’s an enjoyable family-friendly movie that will keep kids entertained.

“Under Wraps 2” isn’t anything new or groundbreaking, but it’s full of charm and has plenty of easy-going Halloween action, that younger audiences can enjoy.    If you or your children enjoyed the first movie, you’ll enjoy this one too.  It knows who its target audience is and delivers a simple, step-by-step film, but does it in an enjoyable way.   It’s certainly a great addition to Disney+ for the Halloween season for younger audiences.   Older audiences might find it a bit cheesy and predictable, but it’s a Disney Channel Original Film, so that’s kinda the point.  It’s a solid kids’ movie for the spooky season, that parents can also enjoy.

Rating – 3 Out Of 5

“Under Wraps 2” is coming to the Disney Channel on Sunday, 25th September 2022 and to Disney+ on Friday, 30th September 2022.
