As we head into the final months of 2024, I wanted to share my thoughts on some of the upcoming shows heading to Disney+ and Hulu this year, which include some new documentaries, British originals, major epic franchises and much more.

Here are the top five originals heading to Disney+ later this year that I’m most looking forward to:

Skeleton Crew

Without a doubt, the one show I’ve been looking forward to the most all year is “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” which follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.

After the last series, “The Acolyte”, didn’t hit as well as I had hoped, expectations for this series are low, but I think, based on the teaser trailer we’ve seen so far and listening to the cast talk about the show at last year’s Star Wars Celebration event, I’m hoping this show goes back to its 80s roots and delivers a more family-friendly version of Star Wars that we’ve not seen for a while.  Not everyone is going to like it, this isn’t going to be a serious drama like “Andor”, but as a kid who grew up on the “Ewok” movies, this feels the closest to that version of Star Wars that I loved as a kid.

The first two episodes are coming to Disney+ on December 3rd 2024, with a weekly release following.

Rivals

This new British Original series is based on the celebrated novel by Dame Jilly Cooper. Set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, “Rivals” delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986.

With David Tennant involved, this instantly takes my interest up to 9!  This looks to be a big, expensive British drama series that I don’t think American producers can create, and I’m looking forward to something a little different to entertain me this October.

The entire series arrives on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the US and on Disney+ internationally on October 18th 2024

Elton John: Never Too Late

The documentary follows Elton John as he looks back on his life and the astonishing early days of his 50-year career in this emotionally charged, intimate and uplifting full-circle journey. As he prepares for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium, Elton takes us back in time and recounts the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, abuse and addiction to become the icon he is today.

After many years wanting to see Elton John on the stage, I was lucky enough to see Elton John perform on his final tour and being a big fan of his for decades, this documentary should be interesting to see.  Learning more about his life and how his whole final tour came together, makes it something I wanna see.

“Elton John: Never Too Late” is coming to Disney+ on December 13th 2024.

Win Or Lose

This is the first series from Pixar, and it reveals what it feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters—the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, and even a lovesick umpire—as they prepare for a championship softball game. Will Forte lends his voice to the coach. The trailer and teaser poster are available now.

The first full-length series from Pixar.  That’s an instant must see and while I’m not a fan of softball (I’m guessing it’s like Rounders!?), I know Pixar is going to pull on my heartstrings and deliver something interesting.  I also have a feeling this will likely be their only full-length series, possibly ever, as they return to focusing on theatrical releases after the huge success of “Inside Out 2”.

“Win or Lose” is coming to Disney+ on December 6th 2024.

Say Nothing

Telling the story of various Irish Republican Army (IRA) members, “Say Nothing” explores the extremes some people will go to in the name of their beliefs, the way a deeply divided society can suddenly tip over into armed conflict, the long shadow of radical violence for all affected, and the emotional and psychological costs of a code of silence.

As a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s in the UK, the situation in Northern Ireland was a constant worry since it was constantly on the news, and we never visited to do any of the “tourist” things until I was an adult and the Good Friday Agreement was signed.  I’m really interested in learning more about this time and with FX behind this show, I’m sure it’s going to be great.

This new original series debuts on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the US and on Disney+ internationally on Thursday, 14th November 2024
