“Star Wars: Starfighter” Announced At Star Wars Celebration
At this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration event in Japan, Disney officially announced that a brand new film called “Star Wars: Starfighter” will be coming out in 2027.
The announcement was made by Lucasfilm’s President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni during a panel at the event.
“Star Wars: Starfighter” will be directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is a standalone adventure set approximately five years after the events of 2019’s “Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker.”
The film, which will begin production this Fall, features all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.
Shawn Levy is a director and producer of films and television series, including the recent Marvel hit “Deadpool & Wolverine”, 20th Century’s “Free Guy” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things”.
Ryan Gosling most recently starred in the 2024 blockbuster “Barbie,” for which he received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Other credits include “La La Land, “The Notebook,” and “Crazy Stupid Love.”
Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling took to the stage, surrounded by fans, to discuss the movie, confirming that it is no longer just in development and pre-production is already underway.
“Star Wars: Starfighter” will open exclusively in theatres on May 28th, 2027 and it will be coming to Disney+ later in the year.
Roger’s Take: With so many Star Wars films announced over the past few years that haven’t come to anything, it’s hardly surprising that some fans are a bit wary of getting excited, but this announcement does seem different to previous reveals, because filming is set to begin soon, the script is complete and work is already underway. I’m personally looking forward to the idea that this film is set years after “The Rise Of Skywalker” since it gives them scope to do something different and move the story forward.
