Last Friday, Disney released the first two episodes of the new Star Wars series, “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, onto Disney+.

Today, Disney has announced that this new series is the most popular Disney+ Original launch so far, beating previous Star Wars shows like “The Mandalorian” and Marvel shows like “WandaVision” and the previously most-watched original series, “Loki”.

The announcement was made on social media:

Thank you to the best fans in the galaxy for making @ObiWanKenobi the most-watched #DisneyPlus Original series premiere globally to date, based on hours streamed in an opening weekend.

The story begins ten years after the dramatic events of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”, where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

It’s not a huge surprise to see so many people have checked out “Obi-Wan Kenobi” over the weekend.  With a double episode premiere, plus the excitement of Star Wars Celebration and the memorial weekend in the US.   All of this will have helped boost viewership, along with more people having Disney+ globally than with previous original releases.

The series stars Ewan McGregor, reprising his role as the iconic Jedi Master, and also marks the return of Hayden Christensen in the role of Darth Vader. Joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” is directed by Deborah Chow and executive-produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Deborah Chow, Ewan McGregor and Joby Harold.

The third episode of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” will be coming to Disney+ on Wednesday 1st June 2022.
