Disney continues to blur the lines between its streaming services Disney+ and Star+ in Latin America, following the announcement that the Star Original series, “The King of TV”, aka “O’Rei Da TV”, will be added to Disney+ in Brazil on August 16th 2023.

The series is set in 1988 and follows Silvio Santos, who is one of the biggest presenters on Brazilian television, and he is diagnosed with a serious problem with his vocal cords, which will leave him voiceless. The fear of being forced to leave the stage brings back memories of his trajectory: from his childhood as a street hawker to his struggle to obtain the SBT TV channel concession during the military dictatorship.

“The King of TV” is rated 16+ and stars Gui Santana, Gabriela Borer and Bárbara Maia.

In Brazil, Disney currently operates two streaming services, Disney+ and Star+. While internationally, Star was added to Disney+ as a general entertainment brand, in Latin America, Disney launched Star+ as a separate streaming service, including Disney’s general entertainment content from studios like FX, 20th Century Studios and ABC, along with live sports. This has led to many fans voicing frustrations about having two different streaming services. With Hulu set to become available within Disney+ in the United States later this year, this will leave Disney+ in Latin America, the only platform left globally without all of Disney’s general entertainment content.
