“Scrubs” Creator Reveals New Details On Potential Reboot
Recently, there has been lots of talk about Disney looking to revive the popular comedy series, “Scrubs”, which is set in the surreal world of Sacred Heart Hospital, where the staff is bizarre and the laughter is contagious. Fresh-faced J.D.and his fellow new medical residents weave their way through each unpredictable day with hilarious results.
The show was created by 20th Television, and following its premiere on NBC in 2001, it ran for nine seasons. The show stars Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke and Donald Faiso.
Recently, the show’s creator, Bill Lawrence, who also created “Spin City” and “Cougar Town”, spoke to Deadline to promote his new series, “Bad Monkey”, where he provided an update on the revival of “Scrubs”.
The biggest problem for the revival is that currently, Bill has an exclusive overall deal with Warner Brothers TV, so he would need to work out a deal to allow him to work with 20th Television on revival.
“I think it’s getting really close to being figured out, and I think in a good way. Big chunks of the creative team behind the camera, and most of it from in front of the camera, are all super invested and excited, so very close.”
This new show is going to be a hybrid between a revival and a reboot, with some of the original characters returning, along with new characters being introduced.
“We’ve been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it’s a calling. There’s no cliché ‘rich doctors playing golf’ — that’s not what it is anymore. So I think that, no matter what it is, it would be a giant mistake not to do as a combo of those two things.”
Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that “Scrubs” is returning, but the company is consistently looking into the back catalogue for established franchises to bring back new content.
If this series gets the go-ahead, it’s likely to be released on both linear and streaming platforms, but if a deal is sorted, it will likely be years away.
All nine seasons of “Scrubs” are available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
Roger’s Take: I wouldn’t be surprised if “Scrubs” was revived by 20th Television, since it’s likely to be a big hit, especially if they can get the balance right between returning and new characters. It’s going to need to be updated for today’s viewers, but it could also be fun to see how the original characters handle a younger set of doctors but with a modern sensibility.
