“Safety” is a new Disney+ Original movie that is inspired by the empowering story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey, who is played by Jay Reeves.

He is a freshman who faces a series of challenging circumstances when his 11-year-old brother Fahmarr, played by Thaddeus J. Mixson, is almost put into foster care when their mother goes into rehab for her drug addiction.

Ray takes his brother in, so tried to hide him at college while continuing to practise football and go to classes, which doesn’t end well.   While it’s a little funny watching them trying to hide Fahmarr in college, watching Ray struggle with everything on his plate is heartbreaking.

By being honest, he is given support by his teammates and the Clemson community, where he is able to succeed on the field while simultaneously raising and caring for his younger brother.  With their support, he is able to step up and enjoy his time at university.  However, everything is put at risk due to rules about students receiving any kind of benefit.

When I heard about the movie and saw the trailer, I wasn’t that interested in the film, since it’s about American Football and a sports film.  But Ray’s story off the field is what I really enjoyed, either without any interest in Football.  I found this movie to be really inspiring and is very emotional, which I wasn’t expecting.  Had this movie been on Netflix or Amazon, I probably wouldn’t have watched it, but I’m so glad I have.  “Safety” is a great feel-good movie that completely surprised me and really pulled on my heartstrings.

This is a movie that isn’t really about American Football, it’s about a big brother stepping up and becoming a father figure, that sees him having to give up his college lifestyle.  Seeing the community surround him is amazing and it’s a heartwarming story that deserves to be told.

Jay Reeves is utterly convincing in his role of Ray and you can feel the passion come off the screen that makes you believe in him.

“Safety” is the type of movie that Disney loves to make and Disney+ offers a perfect way for movies like this to be released, since they aren’t big epic event movies that bring in billions of dollars at the box office, but are valuable and entertaining films that Disney should continue to make.

“Safety” isn’t just a film about American Football, it’s about a brother doing the right thing for his family and inspiring others through his dedication to being the best person he can.  And that’s exactly what we need more of right now.
