Way back during the Disney Investor Day presentation in 2020, Lucasfilm announced it was creating a brand new Star Wars film called “Rogue Squadron” and that “Wonder Woman” director, Patty Jenkins was going to be directing it.

Disney even filmed a promotional video of Patty on a runway with an X-Wing and saying that it would be coming out for Christmas 2023.

However, since that initial announcement, filming on “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” never happened and we’ve heard nothing about the project since 2022, as Patty Jenkins was working on the third “Wonder Woman” film and also a new version of “Cleopatra”. But Patty Jenkins stepped away from directing “Cleopatra” and with James Gunn taking over the DC movie division, “Wonder Woman 3” was cancelled.

Within the last year, Disney has also announced four more Star Wars movies are in development, including “The Mandalorian And Grogu” and a film with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey Skywalker, both of which are set to begin filming later this year.

But it seems like “Rogue Squadron” is still in active development, as Patty Jenkins confirmed on the TCM/Max podcast, Talking Pictures, that she had signed an agreement

“So, when I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3 , I thought maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3 . So we did a deal for that to happen, started a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman. When that went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, oh, we gotta finish this deal. We finished the deal right as the strike was happening. So I now owe a draft of Star Wars and so we will see what happens there. You know, like, who knows?

It’s hard, they have a hard job in front of them of what’s the first movie they’re gonna do. They have other directors who have been working, but I am now, you know, I’m back on doing Rogue Squadron and we’ll see what happens. We need to develop, you know, get it to where we’re both super happy with it.

Disney has recently changed strategies with Star Wars, moving its focus to bringing the franchise back to cinemas, rather than creating Disney+ series.  This is why there are so many Star Wars films in development, though there are still four Disney+ series, “Skeleton Crew” and “The Acolyte”, along with the second seasons of “Andor” and “Ahsoka” scheduled to be released.

Over the past few years, multiple Star Wars films have been announced to be in development, though the pandemic and strikes have caused major delays, but unfortunately, “Rogue Squadron” is a prime example of Disney making announcements too early, as it has already been over three years since the initial reveal of “Rogue Squadron”. Even if there were no more delays, there could still be a couple more years away.
