While Mabel is going all in on investigating Ben’s murder, Oliver is going all in on bringing his Broadway play back to life and Charles is trying to help them both in the latest episode of the Hulu and Disney+ Original Series, “Only Murders in the Building.” Mabel ends up investigating Ben’s apartment with Tobert, the cinematographer who was following Ben to film a documentary, as both seem to be investigating the murder. Oliver is trying to turn his play into a musical and is fighting with Loretta because she got a job in California. And Charles is going to rehearsal while trying to see if someone in the play may be Ben’s killer.

The best part of this episode, for me, was how it took a Meta approach to itself. It referenced the possibility of a female killer for the third season in a row and then said that was played out. Tobert told Mabel he listened to the podcast and liked it, but liked the first season better than the second, referencing the way many viewers felt about the first two seasons of this show. This is a dramedy and an important part of dramedies are the comedy and this episode delivered.

Meanwhile Oliver is struggling with his budding romance with Loretta as she is offered a job in California. She has been trying to make it as an actress for decades and hasn’t found that break, so she’s excited to have a job that provides steady work. Oliver tries to hold her to her contract for the Broadway show before realizing that’s not a way to keep her in his life. He may keep her around but he will lose her. It’s a struggle for him that Martin Short and Meryl Streep really show through their performances. He’s a comedic genius and she’s a dramatic legend. They play off each other very well.

Charles seems to be the lynchpin to make this season work. He’s working with Oliver and he’s working with Mabel rather than all three of them working together. His investigation is crucial to not only solving Ben’s murder but giving Mabel a sense of herself back and helping Oliver achieve his dream. Despite seeming like the third member of this trio through three episodes, Charles is the most important for making it work.

After a disappointing first season by this show’s standards, it has rebounded strong with two great episodes in a row. This has been one of my favorite shows since it debuted in 2021, and it continues to hit the nail on the head with almost every episode. I can’t wait to learn who this season’s killer is.
