This year, Marvel Animation is releasing three new shows onto Disney+ around the world and one of those shows is “Marvel Zombies”, which was initially announced back at the Disney+ Day in 2021.

The upcoming series is a spin-off from the fifth episode of the first season of Marvel’s “What If?”, which pondered the possibility of an alternate reality in which the MCU films Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018) ended differently — resulting in a zombie apocalypse that left a few surviving heroes in search of a cure.

That episode inspired the new series “Marvel Zombies”, which will feature the voices of MCU stars Awkwafina, David Harbour, Simu Liu, Elizabeth Olsen, Randall Park, Florence Pugh, Hailee Steinfeld, Dominique Thorne, and Iman Vellani.

Disney recently shared some details on the upcoming show, with the showrunner Bryan Andrews revealing how the show has come about.

“Brad and Kevin loved the What If…? episode so much. They were like, ‘We need more zombies!  They said, ‘Let’s do a sequel to that episode — but let’s do four episodes, like a mini-movie event.’ So, we’re upping the ante.  It’s TV-MA, so we don’t have to pull punches.  We can be a little bit more hardcore. We go for the throat — no pun intended. It’s pretty wild, pretty out there.”

The Head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation, Brad Winderbaum, also shared:

“In many ways, animation is the most direct access you’ll ever have to a filmmaker’s imagination. If you can conjure it in your mind, you can put it onscreen. Marvel Zombies is proof of that,” Winderbaum said. “It’s not just a zombie story, it’s a sweeping adventure — one with themes of hope and despair, and that’s what you want from a rich zombie story.”

One of the most popular characters from the “What If?” episode, was Zombie Captain America, who even made an appearance at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort during the Halloween period.  r Bryan Andrews also confirmed that Captain America will be returning for “Marvel Zombies”.

“An old favorite also shows up: Zombie Cap makes an appearance,.  He has quite a scuffle with another main character, and I think fans will love it.”

All four episodes of “Marvel Zombies” are scheduled to be released on Disney+ on October 3rd 2025, just in time for Halloween.  All three seasons of “What If?” are also available to stream on Disney+.

Roger’s Take: The Zombies episode of “What If?” has been my favourite of the three seasons, so getting four extra episodes set within this weird multiverse is going to be fun, especially as Marvel isn’t toning down the violence and keeping it mature.  I’m really hoping enough people watch this new show to warrant a second season, but with Marvel drastically cutting back on the number of projects and bringing the “Multiverse” to a close after “Avengers: Secret Wars”, these types of adventures likely are going to be less likely.
