Disney’s Movie Anywhere platform has announced that it will be getting rid of its Screen Pass feature, which allows a user to send a pass to another movie lover that allows them to watch a Screen Pass-eligible movie for a limited time at no additional cost. Users won’t be able to send a Screen Pass to a friend after May 1st 2023, and the feature will no longer be supported from June 1st 2023.

Movies Anywhere is a cloud-based digital rights locker and over-the-top streaming platform that allows users to stream and download purchased films, including digital copies redeemed from codes found in home video releases as well as digital purchases from participating services like Amazon and Apple.

In a statement, Movie Pass said:

At Movies Anywhere, we are continually making changes to the website and app to help our users enjoy and grow their collections.

As the experience continues to evolve, we want to notify you that effective May 1 users will no longer be able to use the Screen Pass™ feature to send a Screen Pass. For Screen Passes sent prior to May 1, recipients will still be able to accept and finish watching the movie before their passes expire. As of June 1, the Screen Pass feature will no longer be supported.

We are committed to focusing on an experience which highlights the things our users are most passionate about, primarily growing their collections and watching their favorite movies across platforms and devices.

Disney’s Movie Anywhere has also announced that the Watch Together feature will be also be shutting down on June 1st. Watch Together allowed users to set up a watch party with up to nine friends who also owned the digital film, to watch a film at the same time, similar to the Groupwatch feature on Disney+.

This doesn’t mean that the Movie Anywhere platform is closing. It just means the ability for users to share their digital libraries with friends and family will be.
