Marvel’s “Agatha All Along” Gets Another Disney+ Viewership Boost For Finale
Earlier this week, Disney released the double-episode season finale of Marvel’s “Agatha All Along” on Disney+ around the world.
In Marvel Studios’ “Agatha All Along,” the infamous Agatha Harkness finds herself down and out of power after a suspicious goth Teen helps break her free from a distorted spell. Her interest is piqued when he begs her to take him on the legendary Witches’ Road, a magical gauntlet of trials that, if survived, rewards a witch with what they’re missing. Together, Agatha and this mysterious Teen pull together a desperate coven, and set off down, down, down The Road…
Initially, the series debuted to a strong start, pulling in 9.3 million views in the first seven days after release. However, looking at the Nielsen streaming chart, the show saw a dip in viewership in the fourth episode, as it completely fell off the original streaming chart.
But over the last few weeks, the series continued to get a positive reaction from the audience, resulting in the show getting the benefit of a “word of mouth” boost, resulting in the seventh episode pulling in 4.2 million views on the first day, which was a 35% increase from the series premiere.
This boost continued as Disney revealed that the eighth episode in the series continued to build on that momentum, pulling in 4.6 million views in the first 24 hours, which was 48% on the premiere. It was also revealed that the season finale pulled in 3.9 million views, which is still 26% higher than the premiere.
While the season finale is slightly lower, it’s expected that these numbers will continue to increase over time. Hopefully, Disney will release a seven-day viewership figure next week so we can have a proper comparison to the season premiere.
Disney is now releasing more viewership data on its streaming successes, but it still has a tendency to keep changing how it presents that data, mixing up how many days the viewership covers, so it makes it much harder to make a direct comparison between shows.
“Agatha All Along” stars Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Aubrey Plaza, Debra Jo Rupp and Patti LuPone.
The executive producers for the show include Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos and Jac Schaeffer, who is also the head writer and directed three episodes. Rachel Goldberg and Gandja Monteiro each directed three episodes of the original live-action series.
Roger’s Take: “Agatha All Along” has been a curious show that seems to have defied the odds. Prior to the launch of the show, there seemed to be much less interest in the series due to several factors, mainly that the last few Disney+ Marvel shows have underwhelmed audiences. It’s rare nowadays that a show’s finale gets more viewership than the premiere since that’s when the excitement about something new is usually at its peak.
This boost in viewership highlights what ideally should happen to every series, building its audience over time as people find the show through social media, friends, family and co-workers. “Agatha All Along” had a mixed release, with a double episode premiere and finale, which will help boost the show’s viewership in terms of the minutes watched. It also highlights how the weekly release model can benefit a show by stretching out its audience and letting people discover the show. Not only has “Agatha All Along” performed better than most people expected, but it’s also a winner from Disney’s point of view due to the fact that the budget for the entire show was only $40 million. By comparison, “Secret Invasion” cost $224.3 million to make, and the second season of “Loki” cost $161.1 million!
