20th Century Studios is currently filming the next instalment in the “Planet Of The Apes” franchise in Australia, called, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes”. This film starts an all-new chapter in the “Planet of the Apes” saga, picking up many years after the conclusion of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes”, which will be released in cinemas on the Memorial Day Weekend, of Friday, 24th May 2024.

“Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes” stars Owen Teague (“It”), William H. Macy (“Fargo”), Freya Allan (“The Witcher”), Peter Macon (“The Orville”), Eka Darville (“Jessica Jones”) and Kevin Durand (“The Strain”). It will be directed by Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner” trilogy).

The screenplay is by Josh Friedman (“War of the Worlds”), Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), and Patrick Aison (“Prey”). Joe Hartwick Jr. (“The Maze Runner” trilogy), Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Jason Reed (“Mulan”) are the film’s producers. Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping are the executive producers.

Filming has been underway for the past three months, and recently, the film’s writers, Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, spoke with FilmSpeak about the upcoming film.

“We’re about to close production,”

Rick Jaffa added that they have about three more weeks of filming left to do.  Currently, very little is known about the upcoming film, such as what the story will be about.  While its a sequel, it looks to be moving in a new direction, as the writers said:

“It’s one of those things where it starts with a germ of an idea, but if it’s got fertile ground, it can really grow.”

With the death of the main character, Caesar, in the last film, it does open up lots of new stories for the creators, as Rick Jaffa explained:

“There’s just a lot of story left to tell”

But the new film won’t completely forget Caesar’s legacy:

“Caesar created something and left a legacy. So then the questions are: what happens with that? What becomes of his legacy?”

“Planet Of The Apes” is one of the biggest franchises in the 20th Century Studios catalogue and is based on a novel by Pierre Boulle, which has spawned two TV series and multiple films, with the first film released in 1968, spawning four sequels. There was then a reboot, directed by Tim Burton in 2001 and another reboot in 2011, with “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes”, which was followed by two more films. Most of these films are available to stream now on Disney+ in many countries, including the UK, Canada and Australia.

Are you looking forward to “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes”?
