Disney’s 20th Century Studios is currently developing a new modern version of “Romeo & Juliet” called “Rosaline”, and according to Deadline, Isabela Merced has been cast to play “Juliet”.

She has previously starred in “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and as Dora the Explorer in “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” film.

“Rosaline” is based on the novel “When You Were Mine” by Rebecca Serle, which retells the classic story through the eyes of Juliet’s cousin Rosaline, who is going to be played by Kaitlyn Dever. Rosaline is a sharp but idealistic young woman—who happens to be Romeo’s recent ex. What begins as an attempt to foil the famous romance and win back her guy becomes a journey of self-discovery as she ultimately works to help get the star-crossed lovers back together.

The film was originally going to be made by MGM but was acquired by 20th Century Studios, with Karen Maine set to direct it, with 21 Laps’s Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen producing the film.

The novel has been adapted into a script by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who previously worked on the 20th Century Studios films “The Fault In Our Stars” and “500 Days of Summer”.

Disney hasn’t yet announced if this film will be going to cinemas first or if it will be released onto Hulu or Disney+ first.
