Disney’s had some major box office success by turning its infamous theme park rides into movies, with “Pirates Of The Caribbean” and “Jungle Cruise”. This summer, Disney’s second film based on the “Haunted Mansion” attraction is pulling in audiences around the world and during a recent interview with the film’s director, Justin Simien, by Screen Rant at the San Diego Comic-Con, revealed that if he was able to make another film based on a classic Disneyland attraction, it would be Michael Jackson’s “Captain EO”.

“Captain EO, let’s go.  Listen, I know it is out of commission, okay? I know that’s not technically a ride, but I am ready. I need some singing and I need some dancing and I need some jerry curl juice in outer space immediately.”

“Captain EO” was originally shown in Journey into Imagination at Epcot from September 12th, 1986, until July 6th, 1994, and in Tomorrowland at Disneyland from September 18th 1986 until April 6th, 1997.   It was also shown at Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.  Following the death of Michael Jackson in 2010, Disney re-released the film at its theme parks around the world, including at Epcot, for a few years before retiring the short once again.

The short saw Michael Jackson play the title role, “Captain EO”, who, along with his crew of mythical space creatures—Hooter, Fuzzball, the Geex, Major Domo, Minor Domo—discover a colourless planet where they are confronted by the Supreme Leader and her forces of darkness. Using the power of music, dance, and light, EO and his crew are able to turn the black-and-white land into a magical world of colour and happiness.

The seventeen-minute 3D short film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who wrote the script along with George Lucas and Rusty Lemorande.  The show also starred Angelika Huston and Dick Shawn.
