Earlier this month, just in time for Halloween, Disney released its latest film “Haunted Mansion” on Disney+ following a short theatrical release over the summer, which pulled in just over $116 million at the box office, well short of its production budget.

The classic theme park attraction has inspired the film and tells the story of Gabbie, a single mom, who discovers that irksome ghosts haunt the home she and her son share. Hoping to restore domestic tranquillity, Gabbie recruits a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid the house of the supernatural squatters.

This adventure and comedy film features an all-star cast that includes Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto.

Recently, the film’s director, Justin Simien, spoke with ScreenRant and was asked about the possibility of a sequel to the film, to which he replied:

No, no talks. I have no idea what they want to do with the future of the franchise, if there is a franchise. I have no clue, but I certainly was really inspired by the experience. And I’ve been spending a lot of time in my strike sort of tending to my own garden with regard to writing, and I think you’ll see the influence of this experience in the next things I do, no matter if it’s another Haunted Mansion movie, or if it’s something original that I write. We’ll see what the future holds.

With the film being a disappointment at the box office, the only hope for a potential sequel, is if Disney feels the film is a big enough success on Disney+, similar to other popular Halloween-themed films like “Hocus Pocus” or “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, which become popular enough to make the Nielsen streaming charts every October.   However, if there were to be a sequel, it’s likely the budget would be massively cut, as the film will be unlikely to make a profit through its theatrical and home video release.

“Haunted Mansion” is available to stream now on Disney+
