Back at the Investors Day in 2020, Disney announced it was creating a brand new Star Wars series for Disney+ called “Lando”, which would see everyone’s favourite scoundrel Lando Calrissian return in a brand-new event series for Disney+.   It was revealed at the time that Justin Simien, the creator of the critically-acclaimed “Dear White People” was writing the story for the show.

At last year’s Star Wars Celebration event, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided an update on the new series:

“You need to ask Donald. He’s the one that holds all the cards here. But there’s no movement.  I will say that honestly. But it’s not for lack of trying. It’s just that he’s a very busy guy. … He’s got another series, and I think one other thing, and then he’ll come our way.”

And this past week, Donald Glover spoke with GQ and briefly spoke about reprising his role as Lando Calrissian, revealing that he has been in talks to return.

“I would love to play Lando again. It’s a fun time to be him. It just needs to be the right way to do it.”

He added that since he is so busy, that his “time is precious” before saying:

“I’m not interested in doing anything that’s just gonna be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I’d much rather spend time with people that I enjoy.”

And he teased how he has been in touch with Lucasfilm about playing the role again.

“Lando is definitely somebody I’d like to hang out with — we’re talking about it, that’s as much as I can say without Kathleen Kennedy hunting me down.”

After almost two and a half years since that initial announcement of a “Lando” Disney+ series, it doesn’t sound like the show is as far forward as we would have hoped and shows why Disney made a mistake in announcing this show so far in advance, without its main star being signed up.
