Way back at the Disney Investor Day event in late 2020, Lucasfilm announced it was going to create a brand new series, “Lando”, which will see Donald Glover return as everyone’s favourite scoundrel Lando Calrissian, whom he played in the film, “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.

For a number of years, we heard very little about the project, but last summer, it was revealed that Justin Simien would no longer be working on the show and that Donald Glover is developing the project as a theatrical release rather than a Disney+ series.

With Disney looking to focus on producing fewer titles from its major franchises, as it feels it has been making too many shows and films from brands like Star Wars and Marvel, it has been shifting many projects from Disney+ to cinemas, to help boost box office numbers and to make more money.

During a recent interview with THR to promote the new Amazon series, “Mr & Mrs Smith”, Donald Glover was asked if taking on the “Lando” project was easy, to which he replied:

No. Maya and I talk about nos a lot, it’s the only power you have in this industry. But I said yes because I like the characters and my kids love Star Wars

Donald continued to explain what it’s like knowing he has the reins on this project.

Yeah, and at this point, I just know when something’s going to be good, because you’re really fighting the industry when you [put your imprint on a franchise of that magnitude]. And it’s not like … I was going to say, and it’s not like I hate the industry, but now I’m like, “Do I hate the industry?” (Laughs.) I feel like I have enough control. And maybe you get painted as a control freak, but it’s like, yeah, control allows for the vision to be singular. And if the vision is singular, people want it more. The less it’s singular, the less people want it because they feel like they could’ve made it. Look, we live in a time where anybody can fucking make anything. You go on TikTok, there’s literally every type of thing. There’s documentaries, there’s puppetry, there’s yarn stop-motion. So why would you want to see something you feel like you could have made?

Lucasfilm has a number of Star Wars films in development, including “Mandalorian & Grogu”.  Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is developing a film with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey, while Dave Filoni is going to make a film set in the “Ahsoka/Mandalorian” period, once he finishes his work on the second season of “Ahsoka”.  Shawn Levy, Taika Waititi, James Mangold and Rian Johnson are all working on new movies.

While we wait for “Lando”, you can watch “Solo: A Star Wars Story” on Disney+ now.
