One of this year’s newest animated series to arrive on the Disney Channel and Disney+ is “ZOMBIES: The Re-Animated Series”, which is a spin-off of the popular live-action Disney Original Movies.

“ZOMBIES: The Re-Animated Series” follows the daily lives of Zed, Addison, and the entire Seabrook crew. Using A-spen’s alien time-warp technology, Zed and Addison start their senior year all over again so they can redo it with all their friends. And this senior year is going to be the best one ever, with the crew hanging out, having fun and doing everything from saving the town to saving their favorite drink in the cafeteria. At Seabrook, even an ordinary day in high school can turn into a wild, ridiculous adventure.

The series debuted on Disney+ earlier this summer and there is a new Halloween special is set to debut on Disney+ on October 9th 2024.

However, the future of this series looks uncertain. It’s being reported that Disney has shortened its episode order and has started laying off some of the project’s staff, such as artists.

Apparently, Disney is discovering that younger audiences are less interested in longer-form shows and prefer short-form media. This also lines up with how Disney has been approaching some of its other shows, such as the upcoming “Sofia The First” continuation, which will feature two stories per episode rather than a more traditional single story.

According to Animation Workers Ignited, some of the staff working on the show at Atomic Cartoons have been laid off. The show had originally been greenlit for 40 episodes, but that is no longer the case; it’s been reduced to just 20 episodes.  Some of the staff being released include Storyboarders and artists.

Ten episodes have been released, so if this information is correct, it looks like there will be at least another ten to be released at a later date.

Roger’s Take:  I’m unsurprised that “ZOMBIES: The Re-Animated Series” isn’t taking off. Personally, the art style looks very basic, and trying to move the “ZOMBIES” franchise away from live musical action just isn’t working.    There’s little doubt that younger audiences’ attention spans are much shorter than they used to be due to them growing up in an era of shorts, reels and TikToks.  It’s certainly sad that this show isn’t clicking and people are apparently being let go, but rather than blaming audiences for not being interested in longer episodes, it might just be that the animated “ZOMBIES” series just isn’t good enough to keep audiences engaged.
