Earlier this month, Disney+ debuted a brand-new feature on its homepage, highlighting the top ten shows and films that are popular on Disney+.  However, this new feature wasn’t available in every country and within a week, the Top Ten feature disappeared.

Today, Disney announced that the Top Ten Today feature has now officially launched on Disney+ around the world, highlighting the best of Disney’s iconic brands such as Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, National Geographic and Star (outside the US).   The new feature also includes Hulu On Disney+ content in the United States if you have the Disney Streaming Bundle.

This new feature on the homepage showcases what is popular on the service in each country or territory on any given day, while driving engagement and discovery of new titles.

Disney has revealed that the Top Ten Today will reflect Disney+’s on-demand catalogue – factoring in both the content available to you based on your subscription (like Hulu on Disney+ for Bundle subscribers) and settings based on your profile (like content ratings). On any given day, the set will feature ten different series and/or films that are currently popular on Disney+ in your country or territory. For series, engagement is reflected at the episode level, which comes in handy when you need help identifying when new episodes have been released.

While this new feature does consider the number of views, it’s not the sole determining factor, which probably means Disney can “edit” the list if it wants to promote something new.

It’s also worth noting that what’s shown within the Top Ten Today list will depend on the content rating levels set for each individual profile, and it won’t appear on profiles set to the children’s “Junior” mode.

The feature is slowly rolling out to all Disney+ subscribers.  If you don’t have this new feature soon, you may need to update your app to get it.

Roger’s Take:  When I first saw the Top Ten list pop up on my Disney+ app a few weeks ago, I thought it looked like a great idea, though it’s very similar to Netflix’s own version.  I also like how the rectangles are vertical rather than the traditional horizontal ones, so it actually stands out when strolling through the homepage.

I’d also love for them to expand this to appear on the brand hubs, like Hulu, Star or National Geographic, to help audiences find popular content quicker, but given it’s taken five years for an essential feature, I probably shouldn’t push my luck!
