“Not Suitable For Work” Cancelled After One Season

Earlier this summer, Disney released a brand-new original comedy series, “Not Suitable for Work”, on Hulu and Disney+ around the world. The show follows five work-obsessed twenty-somethings who strive for professional success and, if they have time, personal happiness, in Manhattan.

“Not Suitable for Work” was created by Mindy Kaling, who executive produced with showrunner Charlie Grandy (“The Sex Lives of College Girls,” “The Mindy Project”) and 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein. The series was produced by Kaling International in association with Warner Bros. Television, where both Kaling and Grandy are under overall deals.

The series starred Ella Hunt, Avantika Vandanapu, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay, Jay Ellis. Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, Ego Nwodim, Harry Richardson, Constance Wu, Laura Bell Bundy, May Hong, Bhavesh Patel, Emilia Suárez and Michael Benjamin Washington were recurring guest stars.

However, according to Variety, Hulu has decided to cancel the show after one season, and it won’t be returning for another season. Warner Bros TV, which produces the series, apparently has plans to try to sell the show to other streaming services/channels.

Following the release of the show on Hulu, Mindy Kaling revealed that work had already begun on a potential second season:

“Our writers room has been up for Season 2, which is wonderful. Of course, the big question is whether we’ll get an official pickup for production, I keep my fingers crossed. I love the show so much, I’m so glad that it’s doing well. One of the things that has made me so happy is how much the cast loves the show, and the writing staff loves the show, and the way that the cast expresses their love through all the social content that they’ve been doing.”

“Not Suitable For Work” is available to stream now on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. As with any show that’s cancelled after one season, I’d recommend watching it soon rather than later, since Disney does regularly remove cancelled shows to save money.

Roger’s Take: It’s unfortunate that “Not Suitable For Work” won’t be returning for another season and highlights one of the biggest issues for comedy shows in the modern era. These types of shows need lots of episodes to get audiences attached to the characters, but with just eight episodes, that can be hard to do. It also struggled to gain much attention after its initial release, with little promotion by Disney and without becoming a viral hit; it continues the trend of Hulu not really understanding how to deliver a comedy show unless it’s animated or an already established franchise.
