Last month, Disney released the second animated film from the popular “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” franchise, and Jeff Kinney did confirm in an interview with me last month, that work on a third film was happening.  The first two animated films were released in December, to make the most of the time families have to watch films over the holidays, and it looks like Disney is going to lean in even heavier on this Christmas theme, with “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever”, which is the sixth book in the series.

According to the industry insider Daniel RPK and DisInsider, a new casting grid has been obtained, indicating that a fourth animated film is now in pre-production.  It was also reported that the actors who play, Greg and Rowley in the first films, might not be returning due to them growing up and not sounding as young as they used to, which is obviously one advantage an animated movie has over the live-action films.

A plot synopsis for the potential new “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” film has been revealed:

“With only two weeks until Christmas, Greg Heffley is doing everything he can to be good as the gift giving—and receiving—season approaches. And though he wants to stay in the good graces of his parents, Frank and Susan, in order to get a prized video game system, he can’t help but get into trouble with best friend Rowley, accidentally triggering a giant snowball that rolls down his neighborhood hill and damages Gabby’s snowplow. Though he and Rowley escape without being identified as the culprits, Greg soon realizes that evidence tying him to the crime might be discovered in the town’s nearby toy donation bin. But when a giant blizzard descends on the town, Greg ends up trapped in his house with no power, dwindling supplies, a frantic Frank, a suspicious Rodrick, and a mother desperate to try to find any way to get her family together to enjoy the holidays. And that’s not to mention the antics of toddler brother Manny or the creepy Santa’s Scout elf that seems to be watching his every move. Confined to his home, Greg must find a way to cover up his blunder without anyone finding out, or he can kiss that new gaming system goodbye. Even worse, with no plow to rescue them, the Heffleys must do the unthinkable, spend time together as a family.”

Production on “Cabin Fever” is due to ramp up next month. This new film could be out for this or next year’s holiday season.   Disney hasn’t officially confirmed the release of the next instalment of the “Diary . With Kid” franchise, and with plans in play to adapt as many of Jeff Kinney’s books as possible into films, it’s not a huge surprise to hear about this new production.

The original “Cabin Fever” book was released in 2011 and was the fastest-selling book of 2011.  There was even going to be an animated TV special based on the book released in 2014, but that never happened.

It’s worth noting that, Disney hasn’t officially announced that “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever” is coming to Disney+ yet.   However, the book’s author, Jeff Kinney, did take to social media over the weekend, to answer a fan’s question about the upcoming film, as the fan was worried that they were skipping “Dog Days”, to which Jeff replied:

We’ll get back to it!

The first two animated “Diary Of A Wimpy Kid” films are available to stream on Disney+, along with the live-action versions from 20th Century Studios.
