“Dancing With The Stars” Looking To Tighten Protocols In Wake Of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Scandal
Recently, the popular British dancing show, “Strictly Come Dancing”, has recently been involved in a number of scandals involving allegations from two of the celebrities taking part in the show that the professional dancers have acted inappropriately during training sessions.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Graziano Di Prima had left the show following the revelation that he had kicked his celebrity partner, Zara McDermott, during training, for which he has since apologised.
Following these occasions, the BBC has introduced new measures to avoid this situation happening again, including making sure a member of the “Strictly Come Dancing” production staff will be in the room throughout training. The BBC is also introducing two dedicated welfare producers and providing additional training to its production crew.
Later this year, the US version of “Strictly Come Dancing”, “Dancing With The Stars” is set to return on ABC and Disney+ and the BBC, who also make the US version, are now having conversations to also tighten the protocols to make sure something similar doesn’t happen in the future. A BBC spokesman told Deadline that
“New measures being introduced in the UK” will contribute to an “ongoing dialogue” around international versions of the show, of which there are dozens including in the States. While there are strong safeguarding processes already in place on Dancing with the Stars U.S., we understand additional measures could be implemented.
The new measures being introduced in the UK on Strictly Come Dancing will contribute to this ongoing dialogue and we’ll continue to work with local broadcasters to ensure that stringent contributor welfare processes are at the heart of all versions of the show”.
Roger’s Take: With the pressure on both professional dancers and celebrities to perform at the highest level on “Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing With The Stars,” it’s not a huge surprise to hear that things have gotten heated in the rehearsals. Unfortunately, it’s only because it’s become public knowledge that the BBC is tightening up these rules, which should have been in place before now.
