Way back at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, Marvel Studios announced it would be creating a brand new “Blade” movie with Mahershala Ali taking over the role of the vampire hunter.

However, over five years later and with multiple delays and many of the creative team leaving the project, “Blade” still feels a long way away from hitting our screens, even though it is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on November 7th 2025, though it was originally supposed to come out back in 2023!

During a recent interview with BlackTree TV to promote the upcoming movie, “Deadpool & Wolverine”, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked about what’s happening with the “Blade” movie, to which he gave a small update on the film and why it’s taking so long.

“I mean, for the last two years, as we’ve been trying to crack that movie, the most important thing for us is not rushing it and making sure we are making the right Blade movie.”

In that same interview, with “Deadpool & Wolverine” being the first rated R movie from Marvel Studios, Feige was asked if “Blade” would also be rated R, to which he confirmed it is and how the tone of the previous “Blade” movies made years ago, set the tone for the new movie.

“Because there were some great Blade movies years ago — they were all rated-R. So I think that’s, like Deadpool, inherent with the character of Blade.”

Next weekend, Marvel Studios is hosting a new major panel at Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con and is likely to give us an update on the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe release schedule. There will also be a Studio Showcase presentation taking place at the D23: Ultimate Fan Event in August, so it’s very likely we get another update on “Blade” soon.

Roger’s Take: While it’s been a while since the initial announcement, Mahershala Ali did appear in an uncredited post-credit scene in “Eternals” as “Blade”, but if Marvel does take much longer to get the movie made, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Mahershala Ali step away from the projects, since he is now in his 50’s and not a single scene has been shot yet. I’m also expecting the movie to get bumped back another year, since Marvel already has three movies scheduled for 2025 and is trying to cut back on new releases.
