Back in 2021, Marvel Studios released the “Hawkeye” series on Disney+. The series is set in post-blip New York City, where former Avenger Clint Barton, aka Hawkeye, played by the returning Jeremy Renner, teams up with a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. But when a threat from his past shows up, Hawkeye reluctantly teams up with Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old skilled archer and his biggest fan, to unravel a criminal conspiracy.

Since that initial release, we’ve seen Kate Bishop pop up in a post-credit scene in “The Marvels” with Ms Marvel, who tries to recruit the skilled archer into a new group of young superheroes (possibly the “Young Avengers” or “Champions”).  We also saw a follow-up series with “Echo” released earlier this year and next year; Kingpin will also be a major character in the “Daredevil: Born Again” Disney+ series.

Since Bob Iger’s return as Disney’s CEO, we’ve seen a drastic shift in strategy: reducing the number of shows and films created to focus on quality over quantity. This left many of the heroes introduced in shows and films in the fourth and fifth phases of the MCU a little lost as Marvel tried introducing too many characters simultaneously.

This past week, Disney announced it would be releasing some Disney+ Original shows from Marvel and Star Wars on 4K UHD discs later this year.  One of the special SteelBook sets announced was “Hawkeye”, which will be released in stores on December 3rd.

The set comes with 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision along with Atmos audio, plus plenty of bonus features such as the “Assembled” making of documentary and much more.

But what was very interesting about this release was how Marvel refer to this as “The Complete First Season”.  Which leaves the door wide open for a potential second season.

Disney has released many of the previous Star Wars, and Marvel shows on physical media, but it had stated on both “WandaVision” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” sets that these were the “Complete Series”, implying that these are one-and-done limited series.

It’s important to stress that Disney also branded many other previous sets, such as “Moon Knight” and “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier” as first seasons.  Neither of them has seen a second season announced, so this might not mean anything, but it does leave future options open, should Marvel want to continue the story of Hawkeye in a new season.

There also is no doubt another major issue for the future of Hawkeye, following Jeremy’s snow plough accident almost two years ago, which nearly killed him and resulted in him having to go through major theory and caused permanent damage.

Earlier this summer, Jeremy revealed on the Smartless podcast that he is finding acting difficult.

“I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel.  I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now. Because that takes a lot of time to get right here every day just so I can have a positive thought, so I can progress, so I can always keep growing.”

However, a “Hawkeye” series could still continue with Kate Bishop as the lead character, with some cameos by Jeremy in more of a mentor role.  We could also see Jeremy return in the upcoming “Avengers” movies, though that might also depend on his health when filming begins next year.

Roger’s Take:  I do think a second season of “Hawkeye”, focusing on Kate Bishop taking over the mantle, possibly with some cameos from other Young Avengers, could be fun, but the wording on this physical 4K disc set feels more like they want to keep their options open, as especially with physical products, they can’t go back and edit the wording out, like they could on Disney+!

Do you think we could see a second season of “Hawkeye”?  Let me know on social media!
