With Disney refocusing its efforts on becoming more profitable following a huge spending spree over the last few years, building up Disney+ with new original content.  One area we are going to see some changes in, is with Star Wars.  Since Disney+ launched, Star Wars has been one of the cornerstones of the streaming service, with “The Mandalorian” becoming the poster boy for Disney+, in addition to new shows like “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, “The Book Of Boba Fett” and “Andor”.

But recently, Bob Iger has spoken out about reducing the amount of Star Wars content being created, with a focus being put back on theatrical releases, as Lucasfilm has become too distracted by making Disney+ shows.  This is one reason why we’ve not seen a Star Wars film released since “The Rise Of Skywalker” in 2019.

Back at this year’s Star Wars Celebration event, Disney revealed three new films that would be coming out in the future. One would be directed by James Mangold, and is set thousands of years before “A Phantom Menace”.  Another is set after the events of “The Rise Of Skywalker” and will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey.  Another film is directed by Dave Filloni, which will be a crossover event film that brings together the storylines from the “Mandalorian” era shows.

But, this might not be the only “Mandalorian” themed film, as according to a new rumour from MakingStarWars, there is a possibility that the fourth season of “The Mandalorian” may be tweaked and turned into a film, that will release after Rey’s new movie.  The reason for this is that there is a worry that Dave Filloni and Jon Favreau don’t have enough time to get two more seasons out in time for the crossover event film.

Earlier this year, Jon Favreau revealed that the scripts for the fourth season were underway, but with the writer’s and actor’s strikes still ongoing over better working conditions and pay, work on the upcoming seasons of “The Mandalorian” may be delayed even further.

This wouldn’t be the first time Disney has changed plans, as Marvel Studios was going to make “Armor Wars” as a Disney+ series, but now it will be released as a theatrical film as well.    All of this fits into the larger plan for Disney+, which seems to involve much less Marvel and Star Wars original content moving forward, since Disney overcooked the franchises, causing some fans to burn out.

There are issues with the fourth season of “The Mandalorian” being turned into a film, as fans have been used to following his adventures on the small screen and will they head out to cinemas to see Grogu in action?   But no doubt, Disney is also looking at

Disney currently has three movies scheduled to be released in cinemas:

  • Untitled Star Wars movie – May 22nd, 2026
  • Untitled Star Wars movie – December 18th, 2026
  • Untitled Star Wars movie – December 17th, 2027

There could be some additional advantages to turning “The Mandalorian” season four into a film.  The budget for the project would ideally be either increased, or would allow for more money to be spent per minute on screen.  A film would likely reduce the amount of filler content that we see in the Disney+ show, leading to a tighter storyline.   Ultimately, this should still be considered a rumour, and nothing has been officially announced, nor should we expect to hear much on this until the strikes are over.
