“Christmas Again” is the newest Disney Channel Original Movie and tells the story of high-spirited 12-year-old Rowena “Ro”, who is played by Scarlett Estevez, who stars in the popular Disney Channel series “BUNK’D”.

In the film, following the breakup of her parents, “Ro” is struggling to come to terms with Christmas being different than it used to be. When she has the worst Christmas ever, where she has to spend time with her step-family, she gets some terrible presents and gets blamed for everything. She meets Santa. With the power of magic, she ends up reliving Christmas Dad over and over and over again (she must do Christmas Day over a few thousand times).

This “Groundhog Day” inspired film is a lovely, fun film for the whole family and quickly establishes the rules of the film, where everything resets when she wakes up. As you’d expect from a Disney Channel Original Movie, the budget isn’t huge, but the team has done a great job delivering a fun family film.

One of the things I really like about this film is that Ro makes the most of having infinite time and masters the many skills and knowledge she needs to achieve her goals. These goals keep changing as she takes advantage of getting to replay the day over and over, as what she wants continues to change.   Since she is just repeating Christmas Day over and over, she slowly learns more about the spirit of Christmas and what the true value of Christmas really is.

While you can see most of the subplots can be seen a mile away, it’s all done in a nice way and leaves you with a nice warm feeling.  It’s what you want from a Disney Christmas movie.  It’s not the best Christmas film ever made, but it never pretends to be.   It’s a bit cheesy, but the holidays are supposed to be cheesy.

For a Christmas TV movie, it’s pleasant and fun, with a nice message for younger fans, especially for those who are struggling with the idea that Christmas isn’t always the same and keeps changing. This is an important message, not just for kids but for everyone, as while so many of us try to keep up traditions by doing the same thing each year, things naturally change.

“Christmas Again” is a fun, family-friendly film that should keep anyone entertained. I was pleasantly surprised, as since it’s a DCOM, I did go in with low expectations, but honestly, if you want a lovely easy going Christmas film, this fits the bill.    I’m not sure I’d watch it again, but I’m glad I did watch it and can easily recommend it as a solid family-friendly TV movie to chill out with on a cold dark day on the couch with some snacks!

Rating – 3.5 out of 5.

“Christmas Again” is coming to the Disney Channel and Disney+ on Friday 3rd December 2021.
