Later this year, Disney’s 20th Century Studios will release the sequel to one of the biggest films of all time, “Avatar: The Way Of Water”, in cinemas on December 16th, 2022.

And to get fans ready for the sequel, Disney announced that it would be re-releasing the original “Avatar” in theatres on September 23rd 2022, with remastered audio and picture.

“Avatar” takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery, as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilisation.

However, Disney has quietly removed the epic 20th Century Studios film, “Avatar” from Disney+ worldwide, without informing subscribers in advance.    While Disney regularly removes 20th Century Studios titles from Disney+ in the US due to previous contracts with other streaming services, this removal has happened globally.

Removing a film from Disney+ ahead of a theatrical re-release has probably been done to try to encourage more people to go see it in cinemas before the sequel arrives.  And when eventually “Avatar” returns, we should expect the newer improved version will be added. However, no return date has been announced yet.

This, likely, temporary, removal of “Avatar” will no doubt be unpopular for subscribers and also highlight for many fans, why physical media is better, when a company can just remove a title, without warning, to try to boost the box office.

What do you think of Disney+ removing “Avatar” ahead of its theatrical re-release?
